Mickey Duffy – a long-time supporter of high school athletics and the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference – has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Denny Magruder Distinguished Service Award.
Duffy will be honored at the 14th annual OVAC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony slated Saturday, Aug. 19 at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.
A graduate of Wheeling Central (Class of 1955), Duffy has spent the majority of his life involved in local high school athletics in one way or another.
After five years in the United States Air Force (1955-60), he returned home and enrolled as a part-time student at West Liberty State College while also serving as a grade school football coach at St. Vincent DePaul and Cathedral in Wheeling.
He became a teacher/coach at his alma mater, most notably as the head golf coach of the Maroon Knights for 30 years. During that time, Central won five OVAC titles (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001) and reached the pinnacle in West Virginia by winning the state’s Class A golf championship in 1990.
Duffy is credited with saving the Maroon Knight’s wrestling program when he took the head coaching reins of the mat sport, assisted by Stan Johnson. He was also the boys’ and girls’ head cross country coach at Central and was an assistant football coach for two seasons. He later became athletic director at Wheeling Central for several years.
He served as the Class AA representative on the OVAC Executive Board and assisted with the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Tournament for many years.
Past recipients of the OVAC’s Distinguished Service Award include Denny Magruder (2010), Bob Robinson (2011), Carpenters Local $3 of Wheeling (2012), Judge Frank Fregiato (2013), WesBanco Maintenance Staff (2014), Ohio University Eastern (2015) and Oglebay Park (2016).
