Oglebay Park to receive 2016 Dennis S. Magruder Distinguished Service Award at OVAC HOF event By Jeff Harrison Oglebay Park. Golfers near and far are well-aware of the beauty and challenge of the golf courses at one of West Virginia’s most popular family and vacation destinations. For the willingness of the Wheeling Park Commission to open its facility to the high school golfers of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference, the OVAC Hall of Fame Committee will present the 2016 Dennis S. Magruder Distinguished Service Award to Oglebay Park and at the 13th annual OVAC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling on Saturday, Aug. 13. When the OVAC conducts its golf championship events in golf in mid-September, two of the three courses at Oglebay – the Speidel Jones Course and the Crispin Course – are utilized over a two-day period giving the young golfers an opportunity to compete on top-notch facilities. Another contribution over the years by the Wheeling Park Commission has been the use of the tennis “bubble” at Wheeling Park as a back-up in case of rain during the OVAC Boys/Girls Tennis Championships in late April. Two conference events that were held at Oglebay’s Glessner Auditorium during the early years were the OVAC Banquet of Champions honoring all of the conference teams that captured championships during the year as well as recognition of a host of scholarship recipients; and the George Strager Evening with the Stars, the mid-week banquet prior to the OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game which has since moved to the White Palace at Wheeling Park. Past winners of the Distinguished Service Award include Denny Magruder (2010); Bob Robinson (2011); Carpenter’s Local #3 (2012); Frank Fregiato (2013); WesBanco Arena Maintenance Staff (2014) and Ohio University Eastern.
